Abstract
This paper presents the first data on the composition of chromite and PGM inclusions that were described in samples collected from the area located near to the Prishtina city in the territory of Kosovo. Ten samples of serpentinized ultramafic rocks, containing high volume of chromite were found in the middle part of the Central Vardar Zone. This chromium bearing area belongs to the Mesozoic ophiolite belt. Samples were examined using microscopic and geochemical methods. At first, quantitative and qualitative mineralogical investigations were done using reflected light microscope. Subsequently, in selected polished sections, WDS microprobe analyses of chromite grains and PGM were obtained. The mineralogical studies indicated that the ore contains mainly unaltered chromite. Grains display pull-apart fractures and cataclastic textures. Some of them have PGM inclusions, that size range from <2,5 to 15 mu m. Chromite generally is homogenous with slight alteration effects developed along cracks and rims. Detected PGE bearing minerals are: laurite, isoferroplatinum and Os-Ir alloys. Nine representative WDS analyses were obtained for them. Performed results have preliminary character and will be continued.
