Abstract

Large-format lithium-ion batteries in electric buses and rail vehicles face significant safety and lifecycle challenges, necessitating early detection of coolant leaks, electrolyte release, and thermal-runaway precursors. This study reviews current diagnostic methods and analyses recent fleet incidents and pilot projects in public mass transport. It evaluates gas sensing, thermal and electrical field mapping, and various monitoring techniques within battery management systems (BMS). The performance of single-signal versus multi-sensor configurations regarding detection sensitivity and false alarms is compared. The investigation also connects detection capabilities with lifecycle impacts related to mineral extraction, manufacturing, second-life use, and end-of-life processing. Results show that using multiple sensing channels enhances early fault detection and lowers false positives, especially when supported by depot procedures and remote monitoring. The study offers recommended configurations, criteria for management systems, procurement guidelines, and metrics to improve leak detection in public transport fleets.
