Abstract
The topic of the presentation is the sustainable development of transportation systems and devices in connection with changes occurring in the human environment and the development of engineering knowledge and practice in diverse environments. Transportation systems are essential for the functioning and development of every community and industry. Observed trends in the development of transportation devices and systems were analysed in conjunction with societal expectations. It was concluded that the concepts of sustainable development from a systemic perspective, combined with machine intelligence and autonomy, are current inspirations for the vision of future transportation. Challenges for research were also identified and discussed. The concept of sustainable development, supported by technology and mechanisms for intelligent operation of transportation infrastructure, enables the development of next-generation environmentally sustainable and socially acceptable solutions.
