Abstract
Synthetic antioxidants are most often used to protect against the oxidation of biofuels. Widely used antioxidants in biodiesel include butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), tertiarybutylhydroquinone (TBHQ), octyl gallate (OG), dodecyl gallate (DG), propyl gallate (PG), pyrogallol (PY), and ethoxyquin (EQ). Without antioxidant additives, biodiesel oxidizes after about a week. The disadvantage of synthetic antioxidants is the significant cytotoxicity at high concentrations. Animal studies of BHA and BHT have shown that they are promoters of tumor formation. In the case of mice, they impair the respiratory system and block the endocrine system, preventing reproduction. In aquatic environments, synthetic antioxidants interfere with the formation of embryos in fish, for example in the Zebrafish. It is likely that synthetic antioxidants will bioaccumulated in the tissues of animals. BHA and BHT in comparison to the natural antioxidant vitamin E (alphatocopherol) show specific cytotoxicity.
