Abstract
Structural modification of high-zinc aluminium alloys influences their strength and damping properties. In a series of studies, Al – 20 wt. % Zn alloy (Al-20Zn) has been doped with Ti introduced with ZnTi-based master alloy. The alloy structure and mechanical properties have been studied using: SEM (scanning electron microscopy), LM (light microscopy), strength and damping measurements. Grain refinement leads to significant improvement in ductility of the Al-20Zn alloy while preserving good tensile strength. The attenuation coefficient for 1 MHz ultrasound decreases by about 24%; the refined alloys are, however, still clearly classified as high-damping.
