Abstract
Structural modification of high-zinc aluminium alloys influences their strength and damping properties. In a series of studies, Al - 27 wt. % Zn alloy (Al-27Zn) has been doped with Cu and Mn, and inoculated with Ti introduced with AlTi-based master alloys. The alloy microstructure and mechanical properties have been studied using light microscopy and measurements of strength, wear resistance and damping capacity. Doping with Cu and Mn significantly increases the strength and wear resistance of the multicomponent Al-27Zn based alloy. Grain refinement leads to significant improvement in ductility, while preserving good tensile strength. Refinement reduces the attenuation coefficient for 1 MHz ultrasound by about 30%, but the refined alloys are still clearly within the range classified as high-damping. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
