Abstract
Surface waters, which comes from surface water intakes, contain significant amounts of pollutants. They can be mechanical, biological or chemical and this paper will focus on the first one. Natural mechanical pollutants are usually consisted of soil which was washed out by the rain or soil from aeolian deposition. The water containing such pollutants is used as source water in water treatment stations. It would be beneficial to have an easy way to measure the concentration of the pollutants in water, thereby it would be easier to add appropriate amount of flocculating agents to the water under sedimentation process. The existing method is time consuming and difficult to measure in situ (gravimetric analysis). The aim of this study is to determine the usefulness of turbidity as quantitative indicator such as indicators already in use (e.g. efficiency based on mass concentration of the suspension). Experiments were conducted on soil samples such as Slovakia bentonites. The chemical and physical properties of the bentonites and soils were determined, also test on using turbidity as an indicator for concentration was conducted. It is expected that turbidity could be used as indicator of the mass concentration especially for low concentrations. This results in an indicator which is more sensitive to the change of the concentration of suspensions and in future could be used to determine the concentration in situ.
