Abstract
Surface waters contain significant amounts of pollutants. Natural pollutants usually consist of soils which have been washed out from river basins by rain or soil from aeolian deposition. Water containing such pollutants is used as source water in water treatment stations. There water is purified from the natural pollutants in sedimentation tanks equipped with selected kind of multiflux lamella packets to enhance the process of sedimentation in order to improve purification efficiency. Sedimentation processes (both clarification and thickening) of non-grain suspension depend, above all, on morphology and phase composition of the solid phase in the suspension. Morphology of non-grain suspension determines hydrodynamic properties, such as porosity, permeability and density and it is crucial to identify the primary constituents of these aggregates before further tests in a laboratory settling tank in counter – current variant of sedimentation. The aim of this paper is to check how laboratory settling tank works with suspensions containing natural pollutants such as bentonite. Three samples of bentonites from Slovakian mines were compared. The study consists, grain size distribution, RTG, SEM/EDX and turbidity analysis of bentonites. Additionally, modelling of suspension flow in laboratory settling tank equipped with multiflux lamella packet is presented. The results of the flow of the suspension in laboratory settling tank would allow to find out the purification efficiency of similar objects, and how it corresponds with settling tanks used in water treatment plants.
