Abstract
The paper explores the potentials for development of mining in Poland. The assessment of innovative mining technologies helps us identify those that might become the standard methods in the next few years. Thus identified mining methods are analyzed in terms of their safety features, possibilities of mechanization and automatic control, environmental impacts, cost-effectiveness. Generally, the priorities might be summarized as follows: Longwall mining systems are here to stay as the basic mining method in Polish collieries, with the prevalence of caving-in strategy. Modifications of these systems will be aimed to ensure improved efficiency and safety features by: improving the reliability of particular system components, development of the plough technology to mine seams less than 1.5 m thick, improving the maintenance conditions of excavations and crossing zones, better control natural hazards, particularly the methane hazard, spontaneous fire and rock bursts, application of automatic control and remote control systems. Residual deposits localized in pillars and parcels of irregular geometry will be mined by short wall systems, particularly open-end and roadway systems. Thick seams located in areas that do not require Surface protection should become the training fields to test the open end and roadway systems. Despite obvious benefits (low investments and low operating costs), cut and fill systems will not be widely applied in Polish mines. It appears that due to difficult mining and geological conditions, adaptation of the room and pillar method shall not be possible in Polish colliers. Though coal gasification is a technology with a future, the current reserve levels and technological factors suggest that such systems will not be implemented on an industrial scale in the nearest future. Nevertheless, it research work is fully merited to define the conditions for coal gasification underground and to develop the new and adequate technology. Thus formulated priorities in the development of mining should help to systematize the major research areas, to prompt the sustainable development of the fuel policy and resource management in Poland.
