Abstract
The research project "Scenarios of technological development in the coal mining sector in Poland" allowed defining conditions for further developments of the coal mining sector in Poland. The paper reviews the geological and mining conditions, prospective coal resources and technical conditions. Geological parameters include: mining depth, scam thickness and inclination, physical and geomechanical properties of rock, tectonic disturbances. Mining conditions to be considered include the natural hazards: methane, fire hazard, climate, coal bursts, mining tremors and gas outbursts. Other major determinants arc: occurrence of mining remnants, shaft pillars, surface protection requirements, presence of boundary pillars between two underground collieries. The way the deposit is situated as well as the geological conditions and the mining method may produce impacts on the level of natural hazards: methane hazard, fire, adverse climatic conditions, tremors, rock bursts and rock and gas outbursts. Technological, organization, social and economic factors include: the mining method. concentration of mining production, sub-level mining and environment protection. The assessment of future conditions and the current state of mining technology reveals the major trends in developments of technologies for underground mining. The major issues are: Improved safety of road heading and maintenance of headings; Adopting the mining method appropriate to level of natural hazards; Improvement and development of new preventive measures to mitigate natural hazards, finding the best methods to control combined hazards; Limiting the environmental impacts of mining activities; New technologies of mining thin seams, residue zones, inclined seams; Development of longwall mining systems to ensure the required reliability levels; Improvement of longwall system parameters to ensure the concentration of production; New technologies of mining in areas under civil engineering structures; Improved methane recovery; Potentials of underground coal gasification. Rational, effective and safe development of underground mining technologies shall be prompted by research work in the indicated areas.
