Abstract

Silicon field emission arrays (FEAs) are promising electron sources for compact space systems because they can provide emission at low operating voltage and with relatively low power consumption. Their long-term stability under non-ideal conditions, particularly at elevated pressure, is to be characterized for such application. In this work, four MEMS-based silicon FE chips are investigated in a vacuum chamber at pressures between 5×10-7 and 5×10-6 mbar. After short conditioning, the devices are operated for extended periods at emission currents of 100 μA and, where possible, 300 μA. The operating voltage increase during testing is used as a measure of degradation. A strong dependence of degradation on both pressure and emitted current was observed. The measurements indicate that practical operation is feasible, but pressures should remain below 1×10-6 mbar to limit degradation and keep power demand low.
