Abstract
This chapter examines the ethical challenges posed by AI from the perspective of social sciences and humanities (SSH). The text outlines core ethical principles emerging in contemporary debates, such as fairness, transparency, accountability, autonomy, privacy, and solidarity, while emphasising their significance in contexts where AI intervenes in processes of interpretation and meaning-making. Special attention is given to the risks of epistemic dependency, reduced critical engagement, and structural injustice. The chapter also reviews major regulatory frameworks, including the EU AI Act, UNESCO Recommendation, OECD Principles, and the US Algorithmic Accountability Act, highlighting their implications for SSH research and practice. Finally, it explores case studies in the labour market and legal system, showing how AI reshapes institutional practices and raises questions of fairness, accountability, and dignity. The distinctive contribution of social sciences lies in translating abstract ethical principles into concrete institutional designs, ensuring that AI development remains grounded in socially legitimate governance.
