Abstract
Protocatechuic acid was used as a model corrosion inhibitor to investigate the interfacial processes governing aluminium corrosion in orthophosphoric acid. The corrosion mechanism was studied using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, reactive molecular dynamics simulations, and density functional theory calculations. Protocatechuic acid showed no inhibitory effect under the investigated conditions, as the aluminium surface at the corrosion potential remained predominantly covered by water that could not be displaced by neutral organic molecules. Orthophosphoric acid/dihydrogen phosphate species were also found to adsorb on the metallic surface. Simulations further confirmed AlOH formation as a corrosion intermediate and indicated possible atomic hydrogen uptake by aluminium. The results demonstrate the critical role of competitive adsorption in determining inhibitor performance in strongly acidic environments.
