Abstract

The tracking of sounding rockets during the launch phase remains an important aspect of communications, the collection of telemetry data during the launch, and the safety of the flight. In order to automatically track aerial vehicles, a Direction of Arrival (DoA) solution is commonly used. In this paper, we propose the design and implementation of a fully functional DoA system which determines the elevation and azimuth angles of the signal source at the operational frequency f0=2.4GHz for the tracking of rocket sounds and other applications. For the system to operate properly, the entire radio path was design, starting from the antenna, through the amplifying, measuring, acquisition elements, and ending with the software. The proposed measurement system utilizes a five-port microstrip correlator as its core component, representing an uncommon design choice. The objective of this study is to evaluate its performance and effectiveness.
