Abstract
Passive radar systems exploit non-cooperative illuminators to detect and track targets without active transmission. Among the available sources, Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) signals provide favorable characteristics such as broad geographical coverage, signal stability, and resilience to interference. This paper investigates the detection of propeller-driven aircraft using a passive radar system that leverages DAB transmission. The focus is on extracting and interpreting micro-Doppler signatures arising from rotating propellers. We present a detailed signal processing chain, simulations, and analysis of real-world experimental data to show the possibilities of micro-Doppler detection. Our results demonstrate that the DAB-based passive radar can detect micro-Doppler features of propeller aircraft under appropriate propagation conditions and the spectral shape of the received signatures agrees with the simulated ones.
