Abstract

In the face of climate change and extreme situations, urban areas need alternative water sources during periods when the water supply network is limited. This study aimed to quantitatively examine the possibility of emergency water supply from public drilled wells extracting groundwater during extreme events periods. The study was conducted in Krakow city (Poland), with 706,000 residents and 263 public wells in a shallow aquifer. Four scenarios were considered assuming the use of water from wells or a mixture of groundwater with water delivered by tanker trucks. Scenarios differed in the water withdrawal by the wells and the number and capacity of tankers. The results show that depending on the scenario and city districts, the amount of available water per capita varies from 3.3 to 7.8 L per day. Our findings show that the proposed method makes it possible to effectively provide water for both sanitary-hygienic and drinking purposes.
