Streszczenie
Agricultural digestate is a by-product of methane fermentation in biogas plants. Currently, the most popular method of its disposal is in the production of agricultural fertilizers. However, biofuel production could also be taken into account. In view of the high moisture content of digestate, special pretreatment of this material is required. Promising results have arisen from the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method, because it takes place in an aqueous environment at a high temperature and autogenous pressure, and avoids the initial pre-drying of feedstock. The resulting solid product hydrochar is similar to lignite. Its physicochemical properties depend on the type of chemical composition of agricultural digestate and parameters of the HTC process including mainly temperature, residence time and pressure. Additionally, hydrochar can be employed in many different industrial applications besides fuel production.
