Abstract

Geological storage is considered to be the most viable option for the storage of large carbon dioxide (CO2) quantities needed to effectively reduce global warming and related climate change. The goal of the research is to facilitate the implementation of advanced underground natural gas storage (UNGS) using dynamic support of carbon dioxide cushion (CDC) in the saline aquifers in the northwestern of Poland. The fundamental advantage of CDC, is the ability to store more gas than if a native gas cushion is used (e.g. N2). The central issue in the physical processes of application of CO2 as a cushion gas is how much CO2 will mix with the working gas and what conditions will be needed to reduce this phenomena. Experimental studies of CO2 have demonstrated that diffusion and dispersion processes are the same for supercritical fluids as for gases and liquids, so there should be no unexpected penalty under supercritical conditions in this regard. If CO2 is used as a cushion gas within the pressure range of 60-130 bar, it would allow significantly larger quantities of working gas to be injected with less increase in pressure relative to using a cushion gas consisting of native gas or inert gas (e.g. N2). Furthermore, when the working gas is withdrawn and the reservoir pressure decreases, there will be a corresponding larger gas drive due to the rapid decrease in density (i.e. increase in volume) of the CO2 cushion gas. In this study, authors presents a laboratory results acquired on developed setup consisting of X-ray and Raman spectroscopy for closer determination of mixing zone in selected core samples.
