Abstract

In recent years, there has been a sustained development of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market. LNG is becoming an important energy source with an important role in ensuring a lasting, sustainable energy transformation in the world. The increasing number of gas liquefaction installations around the world and, consequently, the increasing number of LNG supply sources make it necessary to overcome numerous technological problems in the supply chain of this energy carrier related to various LNG compositions from various import sources. First of all, the variability of LNG parameters during sea transport and storage depends on its composition, this mainly concerns the evaporation rate (Boil Off Rate) and the possibility of the roll-over phenomenon occurring as a consequence of the stratification of the cryogenic liquid resulting from the selective evaporation of LNG components or the occurrence of an incorrect LNG density profile in the tank as a result of improper management of LNG unloading process. As a result of the roll-over phenomenon, there would be a rapid evaporation of LNG and a sudden increase in pressure in the tank, which may lead to disruption of the stability of LNG supplies. This paper presents the results of the analysis of the process of liquid stratification in the tank, which may occur during the transport and storage of liquefied natural gas of various compositions, and also presents the results of modeling the stratification process in order to estimate the time of occurrence of this phenomenon.
