Abstract
The chapter describes changes in water relations (quantitative and qualitative) that may arise as a result of mining operations. The most important effects of the transformations were discussed, including: rock mass deformation and effects of this process for nature, destruction of the primary impermeable layers separating aquifers, discharge of mine water and post-mining sewage, mixing of various types of water and contamination of surface watercourses, landfilling of waste rocks and various post-mining waste on the surface. The study also characterized the impact of various types of mining: hard coal, lignite, metal ores, iron and chemical raw materials on the transformations of primary water conditions. The authors also presented methods of counteracting changes in water conditions, pointing to the importance of choosing appropriate exploitation systems, construction of watertight screens, carrying out gravity drainage of flooded areas, or filling and reclamation of post-mining areas.
