Abstract
The chapter identifies the most important groups of environmental impacts of resource exploitation, as well as the most important factors affecting their type, range, and intensity. The dominant are geological and mining factors, including the type and properties of rocks and mined raw materials, the shape of the deposits, their disturbance, depth, as well as the method of access, type of mining system, methods of processing, and enrichment, transport and many others. The size and perception of the impacts also depends on geographic factors, including the location of the mine, topography, vegetation and the degree of urbanization, as well as on broadly understood social, economic and legal environmental conditions. The most important ranges of the environmental impacts characteristic for open pit and underground mining are presented.
