Abstract
Krakow, the second largest city in Poland is facing with high air pollutants concentrations. The reasons are strong emission sources of pollutants in the city and surrounding villages and the unfavourable location in the river valley causing a strong influence of meteorological conditions on the pollutants dispersion in the atmosphere. Better understanding of the mechanisms influencing atmospheric dispersion can help in more efficient mitigation of bad air quality influence on citizens health. An important tool for studying the influence of meteorological factors on the conditions of pollution dispersion is the observation of their vertical profiles in the atmosphere above the city. This study presents a preliminary results of PM10 concentration profiles measurements (up to 250 m a.g.l.) performed using low-cost sensor installed on board of tethered balloon viewing platform since December 2019. Obtained results are compared with PM10 measurements performed in the Krakow air quality monitoring network and meteorological parameters recorded in the city and its surroundings. Analysis of obtained profiles during pollution episodes shows that high PM10 concentration are observed up to 100 m a.g.l. altitudes which is related to valley depth in the location of balloon viewing platform.
