Abstract
The increasing demand of the industry for critical metals as well as their decreasing primary resources trigger a boom in searching for new methods of recovering metals from secondary resources. At the same time, environmental requirements impose waste management and usage of waste as a source of new materials related to implementation of industrial symbiosis idea. Industrial symbiosis as an approach to commercial activities – using, recovering and redirecting resources for reuse – extends the life cycle of raw materials, reduces waste and takes a step towards a circular economy. The study analyzes a new technology of ZGH “Bolesław” S.A. - one of the largest companies dealing in zinc mining and recycling in Poland, giving the example of shifting the production towards a more circular economy. ZGH “Bolesław” S.A. runs its activities within capital group which covers zinc smelter and companies dealing mainly with production and recovery of zinc and associated metals. The aim of the paper is to present barriers and benefits of implementing circular economy in the process of metal recovery from tailings deposited in tailings ponds. The technology used is unique - not only in the country but also in the world.
