Abstract
Spinel containing refractories have widely used in a steel industry especially in the steel ladle. Due to the rapid thermal gradient in the work conditions, the thermal shock resistance is one of the most important criteria for this group of materials. Furthermore, in the thermal shock quenching test, inner and outer sides of the specimens have temperature gradient which can cause stress distribution in the sample and crack initiation can occur. As a result, cracks propagation in the body of the sample can deteriorate the mechanical strength of refractory materials. In the present work, the thermal shock resistance of the spinel-containing castables (LCC) and spinel containing bricks (A-MA) have characterized by the ultrasonic measurements. The results showed that the sonic velocity loss is a useful method to determine thermal shock damage of LCC castables and A-MA brick.
