Abstract
This paper presents a duct flow model for a homogeneous gaseous substance when driven by a mechanical source of energy in the presence of local sources and sinks of mass and momentum. Here, we consider constant density gas, which means that no source of thermal drop of ventilation pressure exists in the duct (adiabatic flow). In a duct where no internal sources of mechanical energy exist and in which the gas volumetric flow rate is constant along the flow path, the difficulty involved in transporting the gaseous medium is explicitly expressed by the duct drag. Local sources of mechanical energy present in the duct can make the flow of the observed gas easier or more difficult. Depending on the sign and value of the local source of mechanical energy, the difficulty with which the gas is flowing through the duct may vary due to changes in the equivalent drag of the duct. When a local source or sink of the same gas is present in the duct in addition to the local source of mechanical energy, the difficulty can be determined for those sections of the duct which have the same gas volumetric flow rate. In essence, the difficulty (equivalent drag) can be expressed using various values. In the analysed examples, mechanical energy losses were determined based on the law of conservation of mass and momentum applicable to gas flow assuming that there is no exchange of heat with the environment. We determined how mass transfer affects the transport resistance of a homogeneous gaseous substance. The analysis involved various locations of mass sources and sinks. Based on the results, we determined the mechanical energy loss and energy efficiency for the observed flows. © ECOS 2019 - Proceedings of the 32nd International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems.
