Abstract
This paper presents the results of theoretical studies on gas mass and momentum sources in a duct transporting gas of varying densities due to sources of mechanical energy. Mechanical energy losses were determined based on the law of conservation of mass and momentum applicable to gas streams based on the assumption that there is no exchange of heat with the environment. We considered various duct locations of local mass sources with a momentum of zero and different densities. This means that the density of gas flowing through the duct varies between two sections of the duct, but remains constant along each of the sections. A change in gas density in a duct section causes a change in the duct’s drag. The presence of a gas whose density varies between two sections of the duct, coupled with the lack of exchange of heat with the environment, generates internal mechanical energy (natural head). In the presence of natural head in the duct, the gas flow may be facilitated or obstructed. Depending on the sign and value of the internal sources of mechanical energy, the difficulty with which the gas flows through the duct may vary due to changes in the equivalent drag of the duct. If, in addition to the source of mechanical energy (natural head), the duct features another local source of gas with a different density, this difficulty can be determined for the duct sections with constant mass flow rates of gas with the same density. The equivalent drags of such a duct will vary depending on where the local source of mass is situated. In addition, in the presence of a fan working in the suction mode (exhaust fan), changes in the density of gas flowing through the fan will also lead to changes in its characteristic curve, but only if the fan is working in the suction mode. In this paper, we determined how a gas mass source of different gas densities and a momentum of zero can affect the mass flow rate of gas entering (if the fan is working in the suction mode – exhaust fan) or leaving (if the fan is working in the blowing mode – forcing fan) the duct. Based on the results, we determined the mechanical energy loss and energy efficiency for the observed flows. These subjects are of relevance to many areas of technology related to energy and environmental engineering. © ECOS 2019 - Proceedings of the 32nd International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems.
