Abstract

Dry coal separation methods were widely used at the beginning of the 20th century. For example in Europe dry coal separation methods were used in England (1925), and later in Germany, Poland and Belgium (1928). The first air table for dry separation was built in 1919 in the United States. Dry methods can be divided for separation based on the use of grain size difference, separation based on the difference in the grain color/composition, electrostatic or magnetic separation, air enrichment and the simplest manual sorting. As a result of not very satisfying results the dry separation was replaced by separation in water medium (water jigs) or in dense medium liquids (dense medium separators). To find a better device for the dry separation methods in China was developed a vibration-air separator type FGX. At present time there are 3 this type separators in Poland. Two FGX-3 installations operating in the private sector remove gangue from commercial products to improve the quality of the final product. The third FGX-1 installation purchased by the Institute of Mechanized Construction and Rock Mining, operates as an experimental and research installation. Currently, the possibilities of using this technology in hard coal processing plants in Poland are being investigated. Positive results of enriching hard coal from several mines were obtained. The coal industry is considering the decision to use the FGX separator in already existing processing plants. This separator would be a deshaling node of raw coal before directing it to wet enrichment processes. Implementation of the FGX separator in the coal enrichment system will be an innovative solution in coal processing technology in Poland. The paper will present the concept of this solution.
