Abstract

The paper is devoted to a significant aspect of sustainable urban transportation planning – the problem of generating timetables for a public transportation system. According to the UE’s documents on sustainable transportation and development of urban areas it is to be stated that an efficient sustainable urban transportation system is the one in which the passengers find every travel through the agglomeration comfortable, safe, fast, robust and economic. The UE’s documents strongly recommend limiting the number of private cars allowed to downtowns and city business districts, reducing traffic, encouraging citizens to shift from private cars to public transport, and developing coherent and efficient city public transportation systems which include different means of transport such as buses, trams, light trains, city bikes. The objective of all these actions is to calm and balance the city; however it cannot be achieved without robust and comfortable collective transport service. If collective transport service is to be robust and efficient, it is critical to identify specific features of the transport network, identify passengers travel needs and – in result – to generate a timetable that will be well-planned, synchronized and feasible. Therefore, public transport scheduling and timetabling problem is one of great importance for sustainable urban transportation planning. In the hierarchy of processes and tasks involved in planning public transport we can observe that timetable generating process is placed just after developing infrastructure and before providing transportation services, because timetabling influences many factors of strategic and operational levels of public transportation system. Hence timetabling can be considered as a method for making a PT system sustainable by providing passengers with an option of fast and comfortable travel from an origin to a destination for a reasonable price. The key issue for generating proper PT timetables is well-understanding of the public transportation network of a given city and identification of the type of synchronization between lines in the given agglomeration. In this paper the importance of sustainable transport and sustainable urban transport is presented from perspectives of both European and regional developmental policies. Here is also mentioned the role that public transport system plays in a sustainable and smart city. Then the PT timetabling problem is analysed in terms of its being a result derived from the set of the PT network’s specific features, amongst which ones of the highest significance are those referred to synchronization required in a given PT system. In this paper the review of main approaches and methods developed for PT timetabling problem is presented. The paper is concluded with remarks on possible further directions of research on timetabling problem that can be conducted in the domains of both transportation science and operations research.
