Abstract
In the paper is presented a concept of integrated roll pass design for rolling steel sections like channels and beams in the semi-continuous medium section mill. The idea of this method brings to using as high number as possible of common passes for the both types of steel channels and beams of equal height. The new roll pass design has been designed with the aid of computer simulation which takes advantage of final element method (FEM). Especially, the proper filling in the grooves, selection of reductions for individual passes and parts of the groove, the stress and strain distributions in the roll bite have been calculated. It was also possible to compute the grooves dimensions as well as the elongation factors in the respective parts of the grooves. Moreover, the roll separating forces and the strength of the rolls were finally checked. The results of the computations are shown in the illustrative diagrams. The paper also presents the schematic drawings of the former and new passes. Application of the integrated roll pass design brings the reduction of the number of the roll sets and rolling accessories as well as the frequency of roll changing in the stands. For example, the savings of the roll sets in the medium section mill amount to 5 for the both types of channels and to 7 for the both types of beams of the same height.
