Abstract

The paper presents the investigation results of wear susceptibility of polycrystalline composites containing alumina and tetragonal zirconia polycrystals. Phase contents of these materials were designed in the way which allowed different states of residual stresses caused by the thermal expansion coefficients mismatch to be achieved. The mentioned stresses were calculated for real composite microstructures by the finite elements method. The composites with compressive and tensile stresses in the matrices were fabricated. Wear rate of materials was examined in standard tests. The Dry Sand Test was used for the characterization of wear in dry conditions. The wear behaviour in a wet environment (slurry) was investigated by means of Miller Test. In both tests, hard silicon carbide particles of the same size (60 mesh) were used. It was found that the phase arrangement in composites influenced distinctly their abrasive wear susceptibility. The materials containing separate inclusions of the second phase in the matrix showed worse properties than those composed of continuous phases.
