Abstract

This paper deals with issues related to automatic or semi-automatic detection of mining-induced ground deformations within large areas using satellite radar interferometry (DInSAR, Differential Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar) techniques. The DInSAR method, that exploits two SAR images, derives information about ground deformations that occurred between the time of the twoSAR data acquisitions. Using this method the ground deformations can be monitored for large areas with high accuracy and very good spatial and temporal resolutions. The results of DInSAR analysis can be used for areas highly endangered by subsidence phenomenon identification. This task requires automated solutions to speed up the potential whole warning process. The subsidence areas can be identified based on the interferogram analysis. Subsidence troughs are highly correlated with elliptical interferogram fringes. Automatic identification of the elliptic shapes from interferograms could be very useful tool during monitoring mining areas especially to prevent disaster of surrounding of housing area. The problem of detecting ellipses in the images is very challenging due to many reasons, e.g. speckle, the presence of incomplete and distorted ellipses, presence of the outliers, corruption in the quality of edges or lack of a priori information. In this work results of least-square fitting method is presented. The algorithm was tested for interferograms generated based on TerraSAR-X images. The test site covers region of Upper Silesian Coal Basin (South Poland) for which intensive coal exploitation is characteristic. Due to mining activity the analysed region is particularly vulnerable to the occurrence of different kinds of subsidence.
