Abstract

Over the next few years improvement of acoustic climate and meeting even the most liberal standards will become extremely difficult due to economic reasons. Therefore there is a need to elaborate an approach consisting of effective and economically reasonable steps. Many countries have had developed long-term programs for the protection of the environment against noise which take into account those requirements. Preparation and implementation of the similar plan have to be preceded by preparation of appropriate acoustic maps and acoustic climate monitoring. In this article the monitoring system is presented which is as an embedded system of SoPC (System on a Programmable Chip) type. This design allows autonomous work of the device having integrated peripherals controllers implemented inside FPGA circuit. The basis of the system is the DE2-115 development board produced by Terasic equipped with Cyclone IV by Altera. The controller uses a mixed structure incorporating hardware controllers written in the Verilog hardware description language and the Nios II soft processor. The monitoring system to achieve its goals uses variety of peripheral devices. Main elements are: Vaisala WXT520 weather transmitter, Svantek SVAN 945A sound meter and analyser and a video camera. These devices allow the measurement of weather conditions, acoustic climate parameters and their analysis and video recording of significant events occurrence. Additionally, the system is equipped with components enabling remote communication, monitoring and control of the entire station through the use of a GSM modem and Ethernet technology. Measured values may be also accessed by the user directly from the monitoring station, thanks to 7-inch LCD screen with touch panel. This system can be used to monitor e.g.: roads, railways, industrial or aerial acoustic climate in urban agglomerations, cities or individual households.
