Abstract
Cr2AlC ceramics were synthesized by the Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis using chromium, aluminum, graphite powders as starting materials. X-ray diffraction indicates 85.2 vol.% and 14.8 vol.% of Cr 7C3 in the SHS product. Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) and High Pressure-High Temperature sintering have been employed on fabrication of the Cr2AlC matrix composites. HP-HT sintered composites are obtained at 1200°C and 1400°C during 90 s. Composite materials are homogenous, composed of the initial phases. Vickers hardness is 780 HV0.5, Young's modulus 285 GPa. The XRD results and SEM analysis indicate the differences in the phase composition for the SPS sintered composites. Phase composition, microstructure strongly depend on the SPS process conditions. For homogenous microstructures, received at 1100°C during 5 min hardness is 726 HV0.5, Young's modulus is 285 GPa. For the longer duration of sintering and higher temperatures of 1400°C, two types of microstructures are observed.
