Abstract

In the paper the influence of cooling rate during crystallization and the subsequent homogenization mode on the structure and hardness of the jewellery AgCu alloy 925 fineness was investigated. The alloy was poured to the mould heated to the temperature of 250 °C and to the mold in room temperature. Two methods of homogenization in the temperature of 750 °C were compared: annealing in the flame of jewellery torch (for 5 and 15 minutes) and in the furnace (for 1 and 2 hours). After homogenization material was quenched in water. Investigations of the alloy’s structure and hardness were performed. The microstructure was analysed with use of SEM and EDS. Additionally, second phase share (in % of occupied area) in the alloy’s structure in as-cast state and after homogenization was determined. In the structure of investigated alloy before homogenization, the unequilibrium eutectic (consisting of Ag- and Cu based solid solutions) was found. It’s share in the structure was higher (4.4 %) after pouring to the cold mould than in case of pouring to the heated mould (3 %). Average hardness of the alloy after both modes of casting was comparable (about 80 HV). After annealing with the use of jewellery torch for 5 and 15 minutes, the share of second phase in the alloy’s microstructure decreased to about 1.8 %. The hardness of the alloy after this mode of homogenization, for both annealing times was about 55 HV. Homogenization in furnace caused further decrease of second phase share in the material’s structure, to about 0.4 % after two hours of annealing. After homogenization in furnace, higher alloy’s hardness (70 HV), than in case of jewellery torch homogenization was obtained.
