Abstract
Disturbances, regardless of their source, can lead to partial or total equipment damage, located at a given point of the power system. Lightning discharges belong to significant operational disturbances in the electric power systems, wherein overhead lines are most exposed to lightnings. There are two scenarios of such disturbances: shielding failure or back flashover. In the first case a phase conductor is struck directly by lightning despite the use of ground wire above the phase conductors. In the second case lightning strikes a tower or ground wire. It causes arising of voltage on the tower which exceeds lightning impulse withstand the level of the phase insulators and a back flashover occurs. The paper presents the results of an analysis of operational disturbances caused by lightning discharges in 110 kV power system. All simulations were performed using The Electromagnetic Transients Program - Alternative Transients Program. This paper presents the simulation results for overvoltages which occur in the substation taking surge arresters into consideration.
