Abstract
Multilayers of alternate Ti/TiN coatings deposited on X20Cr13 ferritic stainless steel by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method have been tested using instrumented indentation. The effect of bilayer period and metal/ceramic thickness ratio were studied. TEM and EDS techniques were used to investigate and analyze the multilayers microstructure. Results of indentation tests allow to determine the deformation energy of interlayers, based on plasticity of the hemispherical zone deformed beneath indenter. The level of calculated energy of interfaces varied between 250 and 430 J/m(2). The hardness of multilayers increased with a number of interfaces, but only when interfaces were clearly defined. The next step in multilayers hardening was the change in the ratio of the ceramic to metal layers thicknesses. 8xTi/TiN multilayer with 1:4 ratio is even slightly higher than single TiN coating is spite of soft Ti layers in a structure of the coating. Scratch resistance of multilayers is also improved compared to TiN.
