Abstract

Caves are elements of inanimate nature and because of their unique character they are subject to interest of geological, paleontological and archaeological research. Modem techniques of remote sensing, using laser scanners and ground penetrating radars (GPR), can be used in the site survey, because they enable a fast and non-invasive way of obtaining three-dimensional model of the studied object and its selected components. In the case of caves, it is possible to create a geometric model both of an entire cave, and its particular elements such as potholes or speleothems. The paper presents the results of processing the laser scanner and GPR data, recorded during the survey of the Nietoperzowa Cave, Poland. The technology of surveying the entire cave has been proposed in order to create a spatial model. The possibilities of using the phase and pulse scanners have also been compared. The results have been subjected to the qualitative evaluation in terms of interpretation possibilities arising from the needs for an environmental research. The obtained results have been qualitatively evaluated with respect to the possibility of their interpretation arising from the needs for an environmental research.
