Abstract

Natural environment of the Tatra National Park is strictly protected by law. Therefore geophysical investigation has been adopted in geomorphological and sedimentological research in the upper reach of the Rybi Potok Valley, including glacial cirque of the Morskie Oko Lake. The main aim of these studies is to learn about Late Glacial and Holocene sediments, first of all thickness of lacustrine sediments in the Morskie Oko basin, as well as to determine granite bedrock morphology. During the period between 1993 and 1995 experimental seismic investigation has been carried out. For the sediment thickness investigation vertical array of hydrophones hanging in water and seismic source "sparker" has been applied. Both hydrophones and elastic wave source are environmental friendly. In order to define basement morphology seismic reflection method has been applied. Investigation of granite basement has been extended over Rybi Potok Valley in order to define a shape and depth of a basement in the foreland of the Morskie Oko Lake. For this purpose the refraction method with the accelerated weighting drop (as a seismic waves source) was applied. On illustrations some results of investigation are presented.
