Abstract

The oxidation of hypophosphite by permanganate ion was examined in pH range 0.3-13.0, at room temperature. It was found that final products of considered reaction are phosphite and orthophosphate and that their molar ratio depends on pH. The mechanism of oxidation of hypophosphite by permanganate is proposed. The first stage is a fast reversible reaction in which intermediate compound of heteropolyacid nature is formed. The observed dependence of reaction rate on pH was explained by the catalytic influence of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions.
