Abstract
A wider application of gas appliances with a closed combustion chamber results in better natural gas use. The high level of energy efficiency is gained by using of efficient heat exchangers and heating air in chimney and air supply duct. Moreover, the use of gas appliances with a closed combustion chamber allows to care energy because of smaller air demand for apartment ventilation. The basic advantage of these appliances is safety of their use connected with minimal risk of combustion gases penetration into the living quarters. The use of concentric chimney and air supply ducts improves energy efficiency of gas appliances. It is caused by both, heat recovery process from hot combustion gases for the purposes of heating air as well as by higher flow resistance in these ducts and the resulting decrease in the amount of the excessive air. The paper presents results of simulation calculations in order to check how heating the air for combustion process in chimney and air supply ducts with different lengths influences the better energy efficiency and rational use of the fuel, which is natural gas. For simulation calculations the computer software CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) FLUENT 6.1 was used. The program enables i.e. calculation of heat transfer process in concentric chimney and air supply ducts. The increase of energy efficiency caused by heating air is significant and amounts to 2.7-4.2% depending on the length of chimney and air supply ducts. Heat losses to the surroundings from chimney and air supply duct are equal to about 1%. Heating the air is responsible at least for half of the increase in energy efficiency when the concentric chimney and air supply ducts are used. The application of these ducts influences reduction of natural gas consumption significantly (3.1-4.6%). The obtained results of simulation calculations proved that the process of heating air in a concentric chimney and air supply duct has a significant effect on rational use of natural gas. Even the application of short ducts (two meters) significantly reduces fuel consumption in gas appliances.
