Abstract
The research focused on investigating the thermal and luminescence properties of glasses with a mixed fluorine–oxygen network. The glass composition was selected as 65B2O3–25BaO–10BaF2 (mol%), with varying additions of samarium oxide: 0.05 g (Sm0.05), 0.1 g (Sm0.1), 0.3 g (Sm0.3), 0.6 g (Sm0.6), and 0.9 g (Sm0.9), along with an undoped reference sample. Density measurements revealed a gradual increase with increasing Sm2O3 content, while thermal analysis showed an increase in the glass transition temperature and confirmed good thermal stability. FT-IR spectroscopy indicated that the incorporation of samarium modifies the borate network, leading to an increase in the [BO3]/[BO4] ratio and progressive depolymerization of the glass structure. Optical studies demonstrated characteristic absorption and emission bands associated with Sm3+ ions. Temperature-dependent luminescence measurements performed in the range of 10–350 K revealed a significant enhancement of both visible and near-infrared emission intensities with increasing temperature, with particularly pronounced thermal sensitivity observed in the NIR region. The highest emission quantum yield (30.28%) was obtained for the sample containing 0.1 g of Sm2O3. Lifetime analysis of the 4G5/2 excited state indicated increasing heterogeneity of the local environments surrounding the Sm3+ ions and the occurrence of non-radiative energy transfer processes at higher dopant concentrations. These results demonstrate the potential of samarium-doped fluoroborate glasses for photonic applications, including luminescent temperature sensing and optical light-emitting devices.
