Abstract

Zn–Mg alloys are promising candidates for temporary biomedical implants, but their limited strength–ductility balance remains a challenge. In this study, cyclic extrusion–compression (CEC), a severe plastic deformation technique, was applied to high-purity Zn (99.95%) and Zn–Mg alloys containing 0.5 and 1 wt% Mg to investigate the effect of strain accumulation on microstructure and mechanical properties. The materials were processed at room temperature for up to 16 cycles (ε ≈ 6.72). Microstructural evolution and texture development were characterized by electron backscatter diffraction and X-ray diffraction, and correlated with tensile properties measured at room temperature and a strain rate of 10−3 s−1. The tensile response exhibits a non-monotonic dependence on number of CEC cycles. Strength increases during the initial stages of deformation, reaches a maximum after 4 cycles, decreases at intermediate strains, and increases again at higher strains. In contrast, ductility improves progressively with increasing number of deformation. As a result, an enhanced strength–ductility balance is obtained at intermediate deformation levels. Increasing Mg content shifts the strength maximum to higher strains and leads to higher ductility. The non-monotonic strength evolution is attributed to the competition between grain refinement and strain-induced grain coarsening and is associated with the concurrent operation of dynamic recrystallization and discontinuous localized grain growth during CEC processing. These results demonstrate that CEC processing can be used to achieve the good mechanical properties of Zn–Mg alloys through controlled microstructural evolution and improve their strength–ductility balance.
