Abstract
The development of effective radiation shielding materials is essential due to the toxicity, cost, and weight associated with conventional lead-based shields. This study computationally investigates four tellurite-based glass systems containing different metal oxides across an energy range of 0.015–15 MeV. The studied compositions incorporate Er₂O₃, MgO, BaO, and SrO as modifying oxides. Key shielding parameters, including mass and linear attenuation coefficients, half-value layer, mean free path, effective atomic number, effective electron density, and transmission factor, were evaluated using WinXCom and Phy-X/PSD software. The results demonstrate that the BaO-containing glass exhibits marginally superior shielding performance compared with the other investigated compositions, attributed to the higher atomic number and density contribution of barium. Comparative analysis indicates considerable attenuation effectiveness across the studied energy range, with performance exceeding several conventional shielding materials at specific energies. These findings highlight tellurite-based metal-oxide glasses as promising radiation shielding materials for medical and other radiation protection applications.
