Abstract
BPM research has made substantial progress in framing BPM as an organizational capability. Yet how effectively this knowledge supports practitioners in operationalizing strategic alignment across the process lifecycle remains an open question. Adopting the BPM lifecycle as an action-oriented analytical lens, this paper presents a systematic literature review of BPM studies producing practitioner-oriented artifacts. Findings reveal a fragmented contribution concentrated in early lifecycle stages, with largely conceptual focus, limited empirical validation, and lacking end-to-end practitioner guidance. The results point to a productive gap between theoretical advancement and practical applicability, calling for extending BPM research towards practical applicability.
