Abstract
Proteomics has become an important tool in the conservation of cultural heritage, enabling the identification, characterization, and preservation of proteinaceous materials in historical artifacts. Proteins play a key role in a variety of artistic and archaeological materials, including paints, adhesives, textiles, and manuscripts. Advances in mass spectrometry and bioinformatics have facilitated the detection of these biomolecules, shedding light on the materials used by ancient civilizations and aiding conservation strategies. This review explores state-of-the-art proteomic methodologies, their application to the conservation of cultural heritage, the challenges associated with the degradation of ancient proteins, and future perspectives in this rapidly evolving field.
