Abstract
This paper presents a method to design series-fed (SF) dual-polarized antenna arrays. The proposed antenna arrays consist of nm radiating elements placed in n×m grid, where n and m are arbitrary even numbers. The antenna array is divided into four subarrays fed with an additional feeding network. Subarrays distribute both polarization through single-ended (SE) and differential pair (DP) transmission lines. The analysis of the SF dual-polarized antenna arrays showed that combination of SE and DP lines realizes the vector superposition in the antenna array. Therefore, a feeding network consisting of additional patch antenna with transmission lines at its corners and four 1:2 power dividers was proposed to provide proper signal excitation. The designed prototype is composed of 4×4 antenna array, which is realized on a single metal layer. The prototype has been successfully validated in measurements over the 5.8 GHz ISM band. A fractional impedance bandwidth of 7.8% was obtained, covering the frequency range from 5.45 GHz to 5.90 GHz, with an isolation better than 15 dB across the entire band. The realized gain of the prototype varies from a maximum of 16.63 dBi to 16.07 dBi within the ISM band and to 10.48 dBi in the impedance bandwidth. Furthermore, the cross-polarization level is suppressed by approximately 15 dB.
