Abstract
This paper concerns the modelling of an electrical circuit in which the voltage resonance phenomenon is used to increase the current in the magnetorheological damper control coil at a frequency determined by the mechanical structure properties. Vibrations of this structure are reduced by vibration reduction system with energy harvesting ability. This system incorporates an electromagnetic linear harvester that operates according to Faraday's law. The harvester converts part of the kinetic energy of the object's vibrations into electrical energy, which is then used to power the MR damper coil. The mechanical structure is a harmonic oscillator with a single degree of freedom, in which the damping force depends on the current in the MR damper coil. To selectively increase the damping of this system in the neighbourhood of the resonance frequency, an electrical circuit is connected between the harvester coil and the MR damper coil. It is essential that the voltage resonance frequency of the circuit matches that of the mechanical system. To this effect, an RLC circuit with an MR damper coil, represented as an RL two-port network, was modelled and its parameters determined. Computer simulations were then carried out to analyse the effect of the circuit parameters on the current intensity through the MR damper coil at the specified resonance frequency of 4.5 Hz. The aim of the simulation studies was to maximise the current intensity at this frequency. There was a high degree of agreement between the simulation and experimental results, confirming the validity of the model.
