Abstract
Vitrinite reflectance (VRo) has remained one of the most widely applied indicators of organic matter thermal maturity since its introduction into petroleum geology. Owing to its reproducibility, standardized methodology, and close relationship with thermal evolution, it continues to play an important role in source rock evaluation, basin modeling, and petroleum system analysis. Originally developed in coal petrology, the method has been gradually adapted for assessing dispersed organic matter in sedimentary rocks and is now routinely used in hydrocarbon exploration. This review traces the development of vitrinite reflectance analysis from its historical background to its present-day applications. The principles of the method, measurement procedures, and the relationship between VRo and kerogen transformation during burial are discussed, along with the use of vitrinite reflectance to identify hydrocarbon generation windows and reconstruct burial and thermal histories. In the review, the authors also discuss the main limitations of vitrinite reflectance, including reflectance suppression, analytical uncertainty, and cases where the method cannot be applied because vitrinite is absent or too scarce for reliable measurements. Current analytical standards (ISO 7404-5:2025 and ASTM D7708-23a) are summarized, and the commonly accepted maturity ranges, from immature (<0.5% VRo) to overmature (>3.0% VRo), are reviewed. Vitrinite reflectance is further discussed in relation to other maturity indicators, including Rock-Eval pyrolysis, biomarker parameters, and Raman spectroscopy. Although these methods provide valuable complementary information, vitrinite reflectance remains the reference maturity parameter against which many alternative approaches are evaluated and calibrated.
Abstract
Vitrinita reflekija (VRo), od uvođenja u naftnu geologiju, i dalje ostaje jedan od najčešće primjenjivanih pokazatelja termičke zrelosti organske tvari. Zahvaljujući svojoj reproducibilnosti, standardiziranoj metodologiji i bliskoj povezanosti s toplinskom evolucijom organske tvari, i dalje igra važnu ulogu u procjeni matičnih stijena, modeliranju sedimentacijskih bazena i analizi naftnih sustava.
