Abstract
The fifth-generation (5G) communication has recently gained massive attention due to its flexibility and efficacy, allowing high-throughput data streaming. 5G networks are also considered promising candidates for future passive radar illuminators. Integrating 5G networks with active and passive radar systems featuring communication functions represents a transformative approach in modern sensing and data transmission technologies. The unique properties of 5G, including high bandwidth, low latency, and dense network deployments, make it well suited for integrated communication and sensing systems. When joined, the systems benefit from improved detection accuracy, real-time data transmission, and more efficient spectrum utilization. However, challenges remain, such as content-dependent transmission, beamforming, transceiver radiation pattern, and irregular network organization, to name only a few. This chapter explores the benefits, technical considerations, and future opportunities for leveraging 5G networks in joint radar and communication applications.
