Abstract
This study assesses the mechanical performance and microstructural characteristics of wire arc additive-manufactured (WAAM) 17-4 PH stainless steel deposited on a cold-rolled 17-4 PH substrate for structural repair and fabrication in lock and dam infrastructure. To meet the targeted design specifications for yield stress (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation (El) of both the base material and the WAAM 17-4 PH stainless steel, originally specified as 620 MPa YS, 965 MPa UTS, and 18 % El, several heat treatment iterations were explored. The optimal thermal schedule, consisting of solution treatment at 1038 °C followed by aging at 621 °C, produced tensile properties of 703 ± 5 MPa YS, 985 ± 5 MPa UTS, and 20 % El. Complementary hardness measurements and impact toughness tests at varied service-relevant temperatures provided additional insight into performance. Fatigue testing under fully reversed loading (R = -1) demonstrated a fatigue strength of 430 MPa at 2Nf = 107 reversals. Microstructural analysis revealed a primarily martensitic structure with increased δ-ferrite and reduced retained austenite content and an average grain size of 16.59 ± 11.7 µm, as measured by EBSD. Fractography identified internal porosity and lack of fusion as the dominant fatigue crack initiation sites. These results emphasize the suitability of WAAM 17-4 PH for large-scale, high-performance structural components and highlight the critical role of heat treatment in achieving desired mechanical properties.
